Romuald Chaloin Galiauskas

Franco-Lithuanian composer and sonic arts performer. With a background in music technology from Kaunas University of Technology and a post-graduate internship at the 58th Venice Art Biennale ("Sun and Sea" opera), I’ve gained strong sound engineering skills. My Master's in "Composition and Performance of Electronic Music" further expanded my expertise, enabling me to approach sound projects as both a creator and supervisor. During my ERASMUS+ internship at IRCAM, I honed practical skills in computer music production, working with tools like MAX-MSP, Spat, and Open Music, and deepened my understanding of digital sound design and music documentation.

Giedri Vakarai R.C.G. x Fiorini @ Kiras Café

In collaboration with Kaunas Artists' House, Kiras Café offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the creative work of local artists in the concert series Giedri Vakarai (Bright Evenings). Indulge yourself into their music, while slurping a cup of coffee and enjoying delicious treats.

This time, the concert featured a duo of Romuald Chaloin Galiauskas and Linas Kevinas Fiorini. Although these artists are well-known to music lovers in Kaunas, this was the first time they played together. Stepping away from their usual musical styles, they invite the audience to a partly improvised, melodic, and subtly melancholic performance that will brighten up a cozy December evening.

“re/FABRIKacija” (2024)

Eva Galiauskas, a sustainability-focused visual artist, reuses discarded materials and examines the connection between past and present. As a brother-sister duo, we merge visual and sonic arts to explore the relationship between creation for the eyes and ears. Together, we create a physical and metaphysical dialogue through performances or audiovisual installations, developing a self-sustaining visual→audio→visual ecosystem. In this setup, visual movements influence soundscapes, which are partly controlled by the sonic artist in real time.

ALGORITHMIC STUDYS:

This is a cycle of compositions for acoustic instruments and electronics, drawing upon principles of algorithmic and fractal composition as well as computer music. In contemporary society, algorithms play an increasingly significant role, shaping the dissemination of information, facilitating navigation through online databases, and recommending cultural phenomena tailored to individual preferences. This influence extends to music, impacting both consumption (through recommendation algorithms on music streaming platforms) and production (through audio processing software and various creative plugins). However, the invisibility of algorithms often obscures their influence, leading to their outcomes being accepted as immutable facts. The aim of this project is to delve into creative algorithms assisting both compositional and performance aspects, thus promoting conscious algorithmic utilization in the creative process.

Personal exploration:

“MPST”
for piano and electronics (2023)

A sonic adaptation of Joan Miró’s painting “Woman and birds at Sunrise” (1946)
Analysing the late work of Miró, one can find hints of musicality: clear forms, figures, lines, vivid colors interacting in a two-dimensional space. Observing the painter's work "Women and Birds at Sunrise" (Femme et oiseaux au lever du soleil, 1946) I experienced this "musicality" for the first time. Looking at the painting, it seemed as if I was seeing a graphic score, which begged to be deciphered.

Sound Adaptation of Dziga Vertov's Silent Film 'Man with a Movie Camera'"Ž.S.K.K." (2021)

Dziga Vertov’s „Man with a Movie Camera“ (Russian: Chelovek s kinoapparatom) (1929) has brought radical changes and new perspectives to the film industry. Pioneering the documentary genre, non-compliance with established rules such as not having a clearly defined storyline, experimental editing, and a new approach to the reality of cinema, were aspects that gained worldwide recognition to Dziga Vertov. Nonetheless, the film was not innovative in one aspect - the soundtrack, specifically the lack of one.
For composers and performers, this opened up an opportunity to convey a new sonic perception of the film.
